History

We began in 1983 as the Subiaco Business Association, which very successfully supported and informed its members for three decades. As the SBA grew in size and reputation, an increasing number of members came from outside Subiaco. In December 2014, members voted to become the Western Suburbs Business Association.

We welcome all business people to become members, although our events our held in the western suburbs of Perth. Our membership categories suit businesses of every size from solo professionals to large companies. The benefits of joining include networking and marketing opportunities, support, advocacy and access to information about local business issues.

A voluntary committee of elected members is responsible for our governance and strategic direction. The committee has the support of a General Manager and Member Services Officer.

Mark Hann

President – Mark Hann, Tactica Partners mh@tacticapartners.com.au

I joined the WSBA committee in 2011 and, as a partner of a boutique accounting business I was driven by the desire to increase the opportunity to engage with small and medium business owners.

Being part of the WSBA committee provided a means by which I could continue to increase my level of understanding of the issues facing business owners across a wide range of sectors and I see this as a positive influence in my role as Director of Tactica Partners and as a member of the executive committee.

I believe that strong team culture is a fundamental ingredient for running a successful business and I am keen to promote an inclusive and collaborative team environment within the committee as part of my role as the President of the Western Suburbs Business Association.

I now see a great opportunity for our new and engaged committee to facilitate relationships and networking with western suburbs businesses. My hope for the future is to continue growing our membership base, increase opportunities to form relationships in a dynamic, useful and energised way and have some fun while achieving these outcomes.

Jamie Duff

Vice-President – Jamie Duff, Qbit jamie@qbit.com.au

I originally joined the Subiaco Business Association back in 2007 as the business I was working for back then was based in Subiaco and yet only had 3 Subiaco based clients. I wanted to engage with the Subiaco business community and after a few events I realised the best way to do this was to get involved with the committee and help businesses connect and in turn increase my exposure and profile.

The journey has been very rewarding and I am extremely proud to have been involved in both the Subiaco Business Association and the transformation into the Western Suburbs Business Association. I honestly believe in building long term business relationships and facilitating outcomes for members to be able to increase exposure for their business and also build strong relationships with other members.

I have been a member of the committee for almost 10 years and Qbit IT my current employer have been a member for 2 years. Qbit share my vision of giving back to the business community and as such have invested in my time to work closely with the committee to achieve the outcomes and goals we set out to achieve each year.

The WSBA is a great way to network with like minded professionals and also keep up to date with the latest information and trends in business to help give you a competitive edge. I look forward to meeting and assisting our members now and into the future.

Stephen Spry

Treasurer – Stephen Spry, CBSW Tax & Business Advisors stephen@cbswtax.com.au

CBSW joined the, then, Subiaco Business Association in 2013. Having commenced as a small accounting practice in 2010, we were looking to connect with businesses in our area. Since joining, we have been very impressed with the calibre of members of the association as well as the regularity and quality of events.

What has especially appealed to myself and the other directors of our practice has been the diverse mix of industries as well as the mixture of stages of the businesses involved - from well established businesses to new start-ups.

A vision of our practice is to create working partnerships with our clients, over and above the stereotypical accountant-client relationship where people only see their accountant once a year. The community feel of the membership base of the WSBA works very well with the philosophy in that the events create a great opportunity to meet and talk with other business people.

I am very excited to be part of the committee, to be able to assist in the continued growth of the WSBA and its members.

Ron Jenkin

Committee- Ron Jenkin, JAM Design ron@jamdesign.com.au

Jam Design joined the original Subiaco Business Association 6 years ago. We did so because of our need to learn more about our surroundings and learn more from other local businesses. Importantly we wanted to be seen in the marketplace to be progressive, professional and involved. Along the way I became a committee member ( now 5 years ago ) and I must reiterate the enormous value we have gained from our involvement.

The networking opportunities the WSBA offers its members are quite amazing and we can speak first hand of the beneficial relationships it fosters between its community of like-minded business people.

As a Committee Member for 5 years, I continue to appreciate the opportunity I have to give back to the WSBA and help it along the path to achieving our goals – most of which are directly in line with providing quality services to members.

I have enjoyed seeing the WSBA grow from it’s beginnings as the Subiaco Business Association into something greater, and I relish more than ever the opportunity to learn more about other businesses, business styles and naturally, other business people – many of whom have become good friends.

For Jam Design, appearances are everything, and as such we are proud to fly the WSBA flag at every opportunity, and I look forward to nurturing the inevitable growth of the WSBA community.

Helen Moore

Committee – Helen Moore, Smartline hmoore@smartline.com.au

I've been a member & committee member of WSBA for 18 months. As a mortgage broker, I love the opportunities WSBA makes by supporting local business through networking with like-minded business people, creating functions monthly to assist members with building relationships within  the business community in the Western Suburbs.  For example, The  Business After hours Networking, WSBA promotes is a wonderful opportunity to introduce your business & enables your business to take centre stage in your own premises or one of your choice. How good is that! I've met a lot of fantastic people within the Association both on committee and off who are passionate about wanting to be successful as I do in growing their businesses.

Suzy

Committee – Suzy Costanzo, Space suzy@spacerealty.com.au

Space Realty fosters a culture of partnership, professionalism and personalised service with its clients.  Therefore a synergistic relationship with the WSBA is a perfect fit for the Space philosophy, providing networking and co-marketing opportunities across the Western Suburbs.  Both Space and the WSBA encourage long term relationships with their clients.

I am delighted to be a WSBA Committee Member and assist with the growth of the organisation to provide its members with active networking opportunities and initiatives.

Business is about networking, building relationships and taking action.  WSBA provides a fabulous opportunity to its members to share ideas, challenges, knowledge and new perspectives.

It provides the forum for its members to create a wide network of informed and interconnected contacts to exchange best practice knowledge, learn about the business techniques of peers and stay abreast of the latest industry developments, whilst also providing the events to  meet business people who share a similar drive and ambition.

I look forward to being a part of its continued success.

Clark Wilmot

Committee - Clark Wilmot, Ultimo Catering & Events clark@ultimogroup.com.au

As a company, our core philosophy is innovation, intelligence and imagination. The ability to be dynamic and successful in the Western Australian market is made easier with the support and knowledge of the WSBA. Being a member not only provides brand awareness for Ultimo in a valuable demographic, but also marketing and networking opportunities with like-minded individuals and businesses in the community. Supporting local businesses, venues and vested interests in the Western Suburbs area is a mutually beneficial priority for Ultimo Catering & Events. We are pleased to be a member of the WSBA and actively contribute to the growth of the Western Suburbs community.

Catriona Macleod

Committee - Catriona Macleod, Cullen Macleod CMacleod@cullenmacleod.com.au

My law firm recently joined WSBA as a Platinum member. We did so because we could see the huge potential benefit of a business association which is focused specifically on the Western Suburbs. It quickly became clear to me that it was well-run, well-organised and had a leadership group that would make membership worthwhile. So much so that I decided to assist at the committee level. Everyone in business has a million demands on their time (probably their most precious resource) - so to choose one association out of the many business, professional and networking groups available is an important decision. Choosing the WSBA is a good decision. It has introduced me to a whole new group of people, in my local area, with common goals – growing our businesses and creating long-term relationships, with a practical down to earth approach to getting things done. Plus, the networking events are fun and slightly different to the standard drinks events – such as a recent lawn bowls event – a fun and easy way to get to know local businesses and each other, with fantastic priced drinks (!) and technically, we were playing sport. What’s not to like?!

Sandy Gray

Committee - Sandy Gray

When we started our business (Mason Gray Insurance and Risk) just over 12 months ago we were encouraged to join WSBA by a network contact.

We were immediately impressed with the networking opportunities WSBA provides for its members and joined straight away. We were also made to feel really welcome so it was an easy decision to make.

Our business is based on personal service, where we know all of our clients and have regular contact with them. Connecting our clients with other reliable and like-minded service providers is very important to us. This means building a strong network is vital to our business.

To be accepted as a committee member to help WSBA continue to support local business is an honour and privilege. I look forward to helping grow our membership and facilitating new working relationships for our members.
